Long Ride

Report by Graham

This week, the long riders visited the Gate Hangs Well, at Carlton near Bosworth.

We were 5 strong, Vic, Dave J, Mick and Bryan followed me out out of Holt square, through the university and then trying to avoid the worst of the hills, riding via Shepshed, Belton, Osgathorpe and Thringstone, then the route 52 track through Whitwick and Coalville. We paused briefly outside the colliery cafe to ponder the gathering clouds, but pressed on, although at Ravenstone the rain started and we took shelter and donned waterproofs, and took the team photo.

Vic, Bryan, Mike and David caping up at Ravenstone.

The waterproofs had their desired effect, the rain stopped immediately, and we passed through Heather and Odstone before arriving at the pub/cafe.

I hadn't been before, but had heard it was a cyclists' favourite, especially on a Wednesday, and sure enough the place was thronged with sweaty bodies from various points in Leics, mostly of a similar demographic to ourselves. Needless to say, Mick knew absolutely everyone, and even I knew at least two people, so were were joined by my pal, former trike racing legend Steve Hill, and his mate Nipper.

I would definitely recommend this place, great range of breakfast items and cakes, and very welcoming. And if you time it right, the bar opens at 12:00, although that might make the journey home a bit wobblier.

Inbound was lumpier, via Barlestone, Bagworth, Thornton, Markfield and Newtown Linford, with a final steep climb up Sharpley Hill before we split to our various home destinations.

I'd done a shade under 40 miles, the Loughborough contingent probably similar.

Medium Ride

Report by Keith

Keith R was joined by Betty, Rob St, Rob Sm, David and Keith (his second week with us). The leader being confused by having 2 routes loaded in his brain, we finally left Loughborough via Meadow Lane through Sutton B to Kegworth. Occasional sun graced us down Long Lane and wiggling under the A50, between lovely banks of oxeye daisies towards Hemington, then the steep ascent to Tylers Tearooms in Castle Donington. Here Rob Smith admitted it was his birthday as we sat outside and enjoyed some nice fayre.

Trying to shortcut through Donington Park we were turned back because of preparations for the upcoming Download festival, so went via the road to the Cloud Trail at Wilson, then following Route 6 back into Loughborough.

About 32 miles.
